Social media has a huge impact on sports. It's fundamentally changing fan engagement as fans want to connect with real people, not brands. The new fan engagement challenge for sports marketers is to turn their athletes, staff and superfans into influencers.
Technology has changed the media forever. Before social media, television was the center of entertainment, news, and sports. Families would flock to the TV in order to watch the most well known sports events. In fact, celebrities and athletes needed the television and radio networks to broadcast them for their fame.
Social media has done wonders for sports fans, giving us up-to-the-second coverage of news and trends to keep us all in the loop of what's going on while providing an outlet for us all to voice our opinions.
Following and posting sport-related content on social media is wide-spread among young people. To date, little is known about the interdependence between sport-related social media use and the thereby perceived personal body image.
Using a contentious issue in sport – the athlete protests during the playing of the national anthem – this paper examined the relationship between media outlets' social media coverage of athlete protests and the social media user interest and sentiment. We analysed data sourced from the media outlets' official Instagram accounts, along with comments on these posts.
