Schooling in Ancient Rome

Ludus, Grammaticus and Rhetor

Imagine you are setting up a school for young Romans. Your school should include the three stages of Roman Education, with each member of your group focussing on one of the three stages – the Ludus, Grammaticus and Rhetor.

You should research and present information about:

  • type of school
  • school location
  • number of students and type of students
  • teacher, slaves
  • resources, writing materials, classroom set-up
  • subjects taught
  • types of tasks / activities
  • discipline
  • any other information you can find!

You will then present your information (in English, incorporating phrases or sentences in Latin if you wish). You may choose how to present information about your school - a video, poster, model, presentation, essay, play - but should focus on providing detailed, factual information about what school was like in Ancient Rome.
