The International Style The International Style emerged in Europe partly as a response to the cataclysm of World War I and related events. In the face of opposition from totalitarian regimes in the 1930s, many of the International Style's European proponents resettled in the United States, where economic expansion after World War II allowed it to flourish, particularly in skyscraper construction.

Louis Sullivan As an architect, critic and mentor, Louis H. Sullivan had an impact on architecture that extends well beyond his work in Chicago. From the globally recognized phrase “form ever follows function” to the mentorship of a young Frank Lloyd Wright, Sullivan’s influence set in motion some of the most important ideas in modern architecture.
LOUIS SULLIVAN AND CHICAGO SCHOOL: CARSON, PIRIE, SCOTT AND COMPANY BUILDING The Carson, Pirie, Scott warehouses, designed by the American architect Louis Sullivan, is one of the last and more representative work of the famous Chicago School, and as one, one of the most important buildings in the history of the high-rise buildings.
Louis H. Sullivan’s Chicago: From “Shirt Front,” to Alley, to “All Around Structures” Through Chicago building and writing, Louis Sullivan explored the aesthetic and urban possibilities of skyscrapers, particularly their composition on urban skylines. Sullivan envisioned the skyscraper’s eclipse of the fairly uniform streetwall urbanism constituted by what he called “old single or ‘shirt front’ buildings.” In its place he promoted the skyscraper urbanism of “full four-front or all around structures.” He thus pointed the way toward a defining feature of modern architecture and modern skylines—their three-dimensional urban character. Here, Sullivan envisioned an important balancing of the rights to the city between private builders and the broader civic realm.

Bauhaus Building by Walter Gropius (1925–26) The building was designed by the founder of the Bauhaus, Walter Gropius, and commissioned by the city of Dessau. The plans were drafted in Gropius’s private office – the Bauhaus did not have its own department of architecture until 1927.
Ludwig Mies van der Rohe - Bauhaus director, 1930 – 1933 Mies was a shining star of German avant-garde architecture when he joined the Bauhaus as its director. This post enabled the architect to devote his energy to teaching for the first time.

The Crystal Palace - Joseph Paxton The Crystal Palace was a glass and cast iron structure built in London, England, for the Great Exhibition of 1851. The building was designed by Sir Joseph Paxton, an architect and gardener, and revealed breakthroughs in architecture, construction and design.
Origins and Construction of the Eiffel Tower The plan to build a tower 300 metres high was conceived as part of preparations for the World's Fair of 1889. The first digging work started on the 28th January 1887. On the 31st March 1889, the Tower had been finished in record time – 2 years, 2 months and 5 days – and was established as a veritable technical feat.

LE CORBUSIER Charles-Edouard Jeanneret was born in 1887 in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. He studied classical architecture during several voyages. He discovered the solid bases of classical architecture, but was also curious to explore other cultures. Throughout his career, he continually mixed heritage and modernity.
