While it’s completely normal to question your sexuality, this can be disorientating for someone who almost exclusively felt attracted toward a person of the opposite sex (identifying as heterosexual), or the same gender (for an individual who identifies as gay or lesbian).

Sexuality is not about who you have sex with, or how often you have it. Sexuality is about your sexual feelings, thoughts, attractions and behaviours towards other people. You can find other people physically, sexually or emotionally attractive, and all those things are a part of your sexuality.

Sexuality covers a broad spectrum, and is also deeply personal. It’s about understanding the sexual feelings and attractions we feel towards others, not who we happen to have sex with.

With the information age exploding through television, music videos, video games and the Internet, there is growing concern about whether teenagers’ exposure to sexual content from media sources may have effects on their sexual behaviours and attitudes. While newer media sources such as the Internet remain largely unstudied, there is a small body of literature linking sexual messages through television and teenagers’ sexual behaviours and attitudes.

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are a group bacteria and viruses which can be, and most commonly are, transmitted through sexual contact.

You may think that only other people get STIs and that you are not at risk of catching one, but anybody who is sexually active can get an STI if they do not practice safe sex.
