The Pymble Research Model

The cogs show us how one area of research intersects with another. For this reason, you can begin anywhere according to your needs but, if you are starting the journey with us, we recommend beginning with the Getting Ready module. As research is a logical process, missing steps can leave gaps which you will need to fill.

Research is not linear, it rarely progresses in a straight line, moving from A to B to C. Often you will need to jump from one part of the process or cog back to another part or cog. Don't be disheartened by this; it is a natural part of the research process and shows that you are doing what you are supposed to be doing - thoroughly researching and exploring different paths. It is also natural to move through different feelings whilst researching, feelings such as uncertainty, confusion, frustration and worry are normal. They especially come up at certain stages of the research process.

Cogs

These are the steps taken before truly beginning your research. They may include preliminary information searching for background or ethical information, and planning your research.

  • What am I going to research?
  • How am I going to research?

These are the steps taken when looking for and choosing sources of information.

  • How do I locate sources?
  • How do I identify an appropriate and reliable source?
  • How do I use information ethically?

These are the steps taken when reading/listening to/watching information sources.

  • How can I find this information again?
  • How can I understand this information in relation to my project?
  • How can I organise this information to best use it in my project?

These steps are taken when formalising your research to share with others.

  • How will I communicate my findings? What is the best medium for my information?
  • How can I use other information sources to support my conclusions?
  • How can I effectively communicate verbally, visually or in writing?

These steps are taken after completing your project and sharing your findings.

  • How do I measure my success?
  • How can I celebrate my achievements?
  • Where can I take my new knowledge next?
