The former Comanchero national president was shot multiple times in the head and body when he was ambushed after a gym workout at Fitness First Rockdale on February 15, 2018. Hawi was convicted of the Sydney Airport murder of Anthony Zervas before the charge was sensationally downgraded to manslaughter. He died in hospital several hours after he was shot. His wife lauched a court order to extract her dead husband's sperm. As a result of public response, since 2014 due to Hawi and Man Monis, harsher bail conditions have been introduced. Although this protects the right of the community to feel safe, the adult prison population grew by 9% in 2015–2016 (ABS 2016). This raises the question of the rights of the accused in this process
